Enjoy lunch in a beautiful riverside restaurant plus a delightful 90-minute boat trip on a Rhine steamer, in summer, or a visit to a castle in winter. Your tour also includes a chance to taste the delicious wines of the region and, time permitting, a shopping stop at Rüdesheim/Drosselgasse.
To join the Rhine Valley Day Tour With Wine Tasting you should make your way to the tour office at Wiesenhüttenstr. 39, 60329 Frankfurt. Hotel pick-up can be arranged for an extra charge (approx euro 5.00 per person).
This coach tour takes you to the Middle Rhine, the most beautiful part of the great Rhine Valley that runs south to north through Europe. Known as the “Romantic Rhine”, this area has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its natural beauty and historic importance.
For millennia the River Rhine has been a vitally important trade route. In its middle section, it runs through a spectacular gorge with steep cliffs rising 200 meters on either side. The micro-climate within the rock walls provides perfect conditions for growing crops, especially vines. Rich agriculture and the booming trade along the river made the Middle Rhine wealthy and great castles were built on the crags to protect the trade route.
These magnificent castles, many now in ruins, add to the beauty of a landscape which has inspired many poets and artists. The Middle Rhine inspired Heinrich Heine to write his poem “Lorelei” and Richard Wagner used this stretch of the river as the setting for his opera “Götterdämmerung”.
On this tour you will see the famous Loreley Rock, an enormous slate outcrop rising 435 feet (132m) above the river. The rock squeezes the river into a deep narrow channel, interspersed with reefs and rapids, making navigation difficult and dangerous. Old legends say a siren called “Lorelei” would bewitch the hearts of sailors and, when they looked up to the rock, their boat would crash and sink.
Visit the Niederwald Monument in Niederwald Landscape Park and enjoy magnificent views. Inaugurated in 1883, the monument commemorates the foundation of the German Empire after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. In the summer months, a cable car ride is also possible (payable direct).
Relax over lunch in a beautiful restaurant on the riverside. The set meal is German roast chicken with French fries and a mixed salad. A vegetarian option is available. Your guide will ask the group prior to arrival at the restaurant if they wish to have the regular lunch or the vegetarian lunch.
In the afternoon, in summer, enjoy a scenic 90 minute boat trip on a Rhine steamer up to St. Goarshausen. In winter, the river trip will be replaced by a visit to one of the splendid castles. In the afternoon, you will also be invited to a wine tasting and if time permits there will be a shopping stop at Rüdesheim/Drosselgasse.
Your tour ends back at the starting point at Wiesenhüttenstr. 39. Hotel drop-off can be arranged for an extra charge (approx euro 5.00 per person).
