Once we've gathered up our group, we'll meet for some pre-cycling preparation, then will take our wheels to the streets! An English-speaking guide will lead this fascinating excursion. Soweto may sound like an African name, but the word was originally an acronym for "South Western Townships". You will ride along numerous iconic locations as your local guide will give details about the history and recent developments in Soweto.

Your bike tour will start from Lebo’s Soweto Backpackers, from here you will peddle towards a special look out point which offers a picturesque view of the settlement. Your local guide will point out places of interest such as the home grounds of the famous soccer team, the Orlando Pirates.

Your guide will then lead you to Mzimhlophe Men’s Hostel – a former male migrant workers’ hostel. You will learn about the harsh realities of the life of black labourers who were brought to work in mines and other industries. Continue to Meadowlands , made famous when families were displaced from Sophiatown and shifted here in the 1950s.

Cycle past the historical landmarks of the 1970s student uprisings and visit the memorial site of Hector Pieterson, a 12 year old student who was tragically killed in 1976.
