Overview

Hear an eyewitness account of the hardships suffered by the people of New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina’s destruction. The tour offers a glimpse of the days preceding Hurricane Katrina and the levee that was ‘breached’ after it hit the city, displacing so many residents of New Orleans.

Discover the history of the city and its French Quarter, and learn of the connection between America‘s disappearing coastal wetlands, oil and gas pipelines, levee protection and hurricane destruction. The enormous loss of lives and property caused by this Hurricane Katrina, also called ‘America’s Worst Catastrophe’, will be clear after this tour in New Orleans.

You’ll be amazed at the volume and variety of products "offloaded" in the multimodal port of New Orleans, the second largest port in the country. After this tour, you’ll have a better understanding of events pre and post Katrina and the "Rebirth of New Orleans."

The tour begins from the Gray Line “Lighthouse” Ticket Office located at Toulouse Street and the Mississippi River (at the Steamboat Natchez Dock), only 1 block from Jackson Square in the French Quarter. From here you will board an air-conditioned coach and take a tour of New Orleans and learn about the destruction the city suffered because of Hurricane Katrina.

Hear an eyewitness account of the events surrounding the most devastating natural disaster on American soil. Learn about the history of the original city, the French Quarter, and why it was built along the Mississippi River. Drive past an actual levee that ‘breached’ and see the resulting devastation that displaced hundreds of thousands of residents.

The tour is narrated by a licensed tour guide who is a local New Orleanian with his or her own personal account of Hurricane Katrina.

This tour travels through neighborhoods such as Lakeview, Gentilly, New Orleans East, St. Bernard and the Ninth Ward.

The direct connection between America‘s disappearing coastal wetlands, oil and gas pipelines, levee protection and hurricane destruction will also be explained by your guide. You will be amazed at the volume and variety of products “offloaded” in the port of New Orleans, the second largest port in the country, and then distributed across the US.

Souvenir Hurricane Katrina books are available for purchase at the departure point. There will also be a refreshment stop along the way (payable direct).

After this tour, you’ll have a better understanding of events pre and post Hurricane Katrina and the ‘Rebirth of New Orleans’.
