Two men at power at different periods from Spain’s fascinating past have given the country two of the most impressive and titanesque monuments – the El Escorial Monastery and the Valley of the Fallen. Located about 60km from the capital city, a tour from Madrid to these monuments is a must!
Be prepared to see lots of artworks and hear beguiling (and controversial!) historical events from the guide against a backdrop of picturesque landscape and architecture. Depart from Madrid in a luxury bus and head to San Lorenzo De El Escorial, known for the King Felipe II’s regal palace and monastery, and the controversial site of Valley of the Fallen. A guide will accompany you at all times.
Your first stop will be the El Escorial Monastery that will take you to a trip back to Spain’s evocative past packed with imposing art and legends. The sprawling palace built by the enigmatic King Felipe II has a huge cathedral and its walls and ceilings filled inch to inch with paintings with a burst of colour. In contrast is the king’s bedroom with white walls and bare chandeliers with a view of the high altar of the Basilica. It also houses a pantheon in a golden room where members of the royal family are buried, as well as a library with a Sistine Chapel-like ceiling celebrating the seven classical disciplines.
After a short lunch break, your will drive high up in the mountains above Madrid where Valley of the Fallen can be spotted by the world’s highest Christian cross perched on top of a hill. One of Spain’s most breathtaking sites, this controversial structure is a Catholic Basilica, a grand memorial to the victims of the Spanish Civil War and home to the tomb of fascist dictator Francisco Franco. A silent place, the Valley of the Fallen itself is not only beautiful, the view in front of it is equally impressive, full of pine trees and mountains spread as long as one’s eye can see.
At the end of the tour, you will return back to Madrid.
