Drive through charming countryside and pretty villages to the Gulf of Kotor, a glorious stretch of coastline with lovely beaches, clear waters backed by magnificent mountains. The Bay of Kotor, one of several magnificent bays within the Gulf, has been named as the 7th most beautiful bay in the world.
You will visit the coastal town of Risan, which traces its origins to an ancient Illyrian settlement in the 4th century BCE. Risan was also important in Roman times and your guide will show you a Roman villa with exceptionally well preserved mosaics from the 2nd and 3rd century AD.
Then take a short boat ride from the shore town of Perast to a tiny island to visit the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks. This 17th century Baroque church houses one of the finest collections of wall paintings in this part of Europe.
On returning to the mainland, enjoy a guided tour of the beautiful town of Kotor, one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities on the Adriatic, and now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded by the Romans, Kotor developed in the Middle Ages into an important commercial and artistic centre with renowned schools of masonry and iconography.
One of the most famous landmarks in Kotor is the St Tryphon Cathedral. The original church was constructed in the 8th century, according to the records of the Byzantine Emperor. A new church, built in 1166 AD, was subsequently damaged during the 1667 earthquake and then restored.
After your guided tour, you will have time to stroll around Kotor on your own before starting the return journey. On arrival back in Dubrovnik you will be dropped back at the starting point.
