Overview

On this exciting night-time walking tour, you’ll discover another older darker side of Florence and hear tales they don’t tell on other tours. Tragic love, cold-blooded murder and family feuds are the stuff of powerful legends and intriguing mysteries linked with many famous city landmarks.

Listen with rapt attention as your guide describes sordid details of the Florence of the Middle Ages, when cut-throat business (literally) was the name of the game, and protecting your tower home from intruders meant keeping a cauldron of oil always on the boil.

Under cover of darkness visit places like Piazza Signoria, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Strozzi, and Palazzo di Parte Guelfa that formed the backdrop to murder and mayhem, passion and politics.

Hear about the attempted assassination of the Medici heirs (in a church no less) and the scandals that set medieval Florentine tongues wagging. See the Palazzo Bianca Cappello, built for the beautiful mistress of Francesco de’ Medici (to the fury of his wife!).

But it’s not all treachery and treason. This tour has a sweet side too. You’ll enjoy a delicious gelato at a gelateria known for its delicious, homemade ice cream!

Your After Dark Walking Tour of Florence begins when you meet your guide in front of the Louis Vuitton store in Piazza degli Strozzi. For 2 hours, you’ll be enthralled by tales of an older, darker side of a city famed for its beautiful architecture and artwork. All buildings will be viewed from the outside.

You’ll see the Palazzo Strozzi, the palace that was to have been the home of Filippo Strozzi the Elder, a rival of the Medici who wanted a magnificent palace to assert his family's continued prominence and, perhaps more important, make a political statement of his own status. Unfortunately, Filippo died in 1491, long before the palace was completed in 1538. Duke Cosimo I de' Medici confiscated it in the same year, not returning it to the Strozzi family until 30 years later.

At the Palazzo di Parte Guelfa, you’ll learn about the bloody feuds between the Guelph Party, which was pro-papal, and the Ghibellines, who were pro-imperial.

You’ll learn all the gossip about the ill-fated Bianca Cappello, mistress of Francesco I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany. Francesco built the Palazzo di Bianca Cappello for her, scandalizing Florence and enraging his wife. He eventually married Bianca after the death of his wife. In 1857, at the Villa Medici in Poggio a Caiano, Francesco and Bianca died on the same day, possibly poisoned by arsenic, or as some historians believe, from malarial fever.

Other famous Florence landmarks on your route include Piazza della Signoria, which played a key role in the history of the Florentine Republic, the Uffizi Gallery, one of the oldest and most famous art museums of the Western world, the vast Palazzo Pitti on the south bank of the Arno and the famous Ponte Vecchio, a bridge which has existed in various forms since 996.

After tales of treachery and treason, your tour will conclude on a sweet note with a stop at one of Florence’s best gelaterias, for a gelato of your choice.

Your tour ends around 9:45pm Ponte Santa Trinità. After this you will need to make your own arrangements to return to your accommodation.
