Overview

Behold the lunar landscape & the isolated highlands as you explore the Askja area complete with a volcano tour through dramatic lava fields. Askja is a caldera in a very remote area in the Icelandic central highlands and the alien landscape has an almost ethereal quality which is a must-see. It is also one of the biggest volcanoes in Iceland and has a history of catastrophic eruptions through the ages!

Become a part of history and walk in the footsteps of Apollo Astronauts as you explore the Askja area. The Askja area was one of the main locations where NASA trained their Apollo Astronauts before the Apollo 11 lunar landing in 1969. Inside the caldera enjoy a breathtaking view over Öskjuvatn Lake, the deepest lake in Iceland.

The tour takes you on the road less traveled and covers off the map sights as well as iconic landmarks such as Herðubreiðalindir Oasis and Drekagil. Catch a glimpse of where Icelandic outlaws lived in the Middle Ages when they’d been banished! But most importantly, keep your eyes peeled to spot trolls, ghosts and other creatures that are said to live in the area and have haunted travelers for centuries!
